JAC S3 Plus

2026-09-30 16:10:03

Model Overview

The JAC S3 Plus is not an official standalone model nameplate, but rather refers to the export version and market-specific trim of the JAC Refine S3. Its domestic Chinese counterpart is JAC’s core B-segment crossover—the Refine S3. Rolled out by JAC Group, the model was positioned as an entry-level urban compact SUV catering primarily to younger, post-85s car buyers.

The first-generation Refine S3 made its official debut in August 2014, making an immediate splash in the market and quickly establishing itself as a key sales pillar for JAC Motors. Capitalising on its strong domestic momentum, JAC also designated it as a global strategic model, exporting it to various regions including the Middle East (such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE) and South America under nameplates like the JAC S3 Plus. In China, after spanning three generations, the Refine S3 was gradually phased out and discontinued around 2020. Overseas, however, the S3 Plus remains on sale in multiple markets through ongoing localised adaptations. Key segment rivals include other B-segment crossovers such as the Baojun 510, Chery Tiggo 3x, and Changan CS35 PLUS.

Design Language

Visually, the Refine S3 (badged as S3 Plus overseas) sports JAC’s signature "vase-mouth" front grille design, delivering an aggressive and distinctive road presence. The large-mouth front grille with chrome garnishes merges seamlessly with the sleek headlamp clusters on both sides, creating a striking fascia. The profile features clean character lines, with an upswept waistline and integrated roof rails generating a forward-leaning stance. The rear is neatly sculpted with a chunky black lower bumper that adds a rugged SUV touch. Dimensionally, it measures 4,325 mm in length, 1,765 mm in width, and 1,625 mm in height (with minor regional variations depending on spec), riding on a 2,560 mm wheelbase. These classic compact SUV proportions make it remarkably agile when weaving through urban traffic.

The interior layout leans heavily towards daily practicality. The centre console is cleanly laid out with clearly defined functional zones. Depending on the model year, the central infotainment display was progressively upgraded from an early 7-inch unit to an 8-inch or 10.25-inch floating touchscreen. In terms of cabin colourways, early Refine S3 variants featured a vibrant orange-and-black dual-tone theme for a sporty, youthful flair, whereas the export S3 Plus predominantly opts for a dark cabin paired with leatherette seats, delivering a cleaner and more understated aesthetic.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Refine S3/S3 Plus offered different engine options depending on the model year and regional market. For the domestic Chinese market, later iterations were powered by 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines with VVT (Variable Valve Timing), with the 1.5L mill producing approximately 116 PS (85 kW) and a peak torque of around 146–150 Nm.

In Middle Eastern export markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the S3 Plus is primarily powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit delivering roughly 118–120 PS (88 kW) and 150 Nm of torque. Power is delivered exclusively to the front wheels (FWD) via a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), depending on the variant. The drive layout is front-engine, front-wheel drive. The powertrain calibration prioritises smooth power delivery and fuel economy for urban driving, adequately handling daily commuting needs, although power reserves feel modest during high-speed cruising and hard overtakes. With a combined fuel consumption rated between 6.5 and 6.7 L/100 km, running efficiency stands as its headline selling point.

Ride & Handling

The chassis setup of the Refine S3/S3 Plus is tuned for everyday comfort and cruising stability. It employs a class-standard suspension configuration comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam semi-independent setup. This setup helps maximise cabin room and packaging efficiency. Electric Power Steering (EPS) comes standard, offering a light steering feel at low speeds for effortless parking, while firming up reassuringly at highway speeds with decent on-centre tracking. Although some owners noted that the suspension is on the firmer side with noticeable road feedback over rough surfaces, the overall ride quality remains respectable for its price point, easily meeting the demands of regular city commutes.

Cabin & Features

In-cabin equipment prioritises convenience and smart connectivity. High-spec variants are equipped with an 8- to 10.25-inch colour central touchscreen integrating a reverse camera, Bluetooth telephony, GPS navigation, smartphone connectivity, and voice control. Overseas S3 Plus variants also come standard with a touchscreen audio system, USB ports, cruise control, and other convenience features.

When it comes to space utilisation, the Refine S3 scores well. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats can expand boot capacity up to a generous 600 litres, easily accommodating family cargo needs. Seat upholstery is finished in either fabric or leatherette depending on the trim, offering above-average seating comfort within its segment.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety is a key selling proposition for the Refine S3/S3 Plus in export markets. The body shell incorporates over 45% high-strength steel to enhance passenger cell rigidity and crash protection. Standard active and passive safety features across the range include ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and Hill-start Assist. In addition, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera are fitted across most variants. Higher-spec grades add up to six airbags and a 360-degree surround-view camera for comprehensive protection. On the advanced driver assistance front, the vehicle is limited to standard cruise control and does not feature Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Market Performance & Reception

The Refine S3 once wrote a remarkable sales success story in China. Following its 2014 launch, it quickly became an overnight hit—breaching monthly sales of 15,000 units in November of that year, just three months after its debut, and ranking as the second best-selling SUV nationwide. In 2015, its annual sales reached a whopping 221,000 units, taking the crown as China's top-selling B-segment SUV of the year. However, this explosive sales growth was accompanied by a surge in quality control issues. A wave of owner complaints highlighted problems such as uneven tyre wear, sluggish powertrain response, rough fit and finish, severe interior squeaks and rattles, and an overly stiff ride. These reliability concerns severely eroded early customer goodwill, resulting in a cliff-like sales drop that ultimately forced the Refine S3 into domestic discontinuation.

Nevertheless, throughout its production run, the model earned strong recognition from cost-conscious buyers for its high value for money and solid fuel efficiency. Today, the export S3 Plus continues to sell in overseas markets with localised equipment updates—such as the smarter "Zhiling" connected car ecosystem and iFLYTEK voice recognition—striving to hold its ground through a competitive value-for-money proposition.
